Should a Christian See a Therapist?

Should a Christian see a therapist? This is a question that has raised significant debate over the years.

At Infinite Healing, we believe that Christians should see therapists. In fact, we are a counseling practice in Green Bay that embraces our Christian identity. Over the years, we’ve seen many people transform their lives using a variety of therapeutic approaches. As Christians, we all need other people to support us as we navigate relationships, process challenging emotions, and discern our callings.

Therapy can be extremely helpful for Christians and non-Christians alike. Here are six reasons why a Christian should see a therapist.

  1. Live Life Abundantly and Authentically

Life is hard, but it doesn’t have to be joyless. Christians should see therapists to learn how to navigate life’s challenges while also finding space to appreciate God’s goodness. In therapy sessions, you can practice prayer and mindfulness. Or you can find a sense of peace through EMDR. These are just a few ways that therapy helps us embrace Jesus’ gift that we may have life and have it to the full.

  1. Find Freedom from Difficult Emotions

What do Christians do with challenging emotions such as anger, jealousy, and grief? Sometimes we’re told that these are “bad” emotions and that we should shove them down and look toward what is good. However, ignoring difficult emotions often leads to depression, outbursts, or addiction. At Infinite Healing, we encourage patients to look at challenging emotions and understand where they come from. By processing past life events, we can often find freedom.

  1. Gain Perspective on Past Beliefs

As adults, we spend a lot of time untangling. You may be weighed down by wrong beliefs from a former pastor or church member. The New Testament is full of Paul’s letters correcting the church, so there is room to reevaluate what you’ve been taught at church. A good therapist should help Christians identify and embrace what is truly healthy and God-honoring.

  1. Embrace Your God-Given Purpose

Calling is a significant theme in the Bible, and Christians today need to consider their life purposes. What narratives has society told you about who you are and what you should be? How do your skills and talents make you who you are? Through counseling or coaching, you have the opportunity to explore these questions here at Infinite Healing.

  1. Heal from Anxiety and Depression

Unfortunately, some Christians believe that anxiety and depression are sins. Full stop. However, this belief leads to years of feeling stuck. In recent years, we’ve learned that anxiety and depression are rooted in emotions, thoughts, and physical health. That’s why we offer a Nervous System Nutrition Course that calms the body and leads to freedom from anxiety.

  1. Restore Strained Relationships

Therapy can help you truly live the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. By reframing relationships, assessing our own self-worth, and taking an honest look at past trauma, Christians should see therapists for help approaching relationships from a perspective of authenticity and objectivity. Whether you’re struggling with relationships at work, at home, or in social situations, we can help you navigate complex situations.

Christians Should Not Ignore Therapy

It is true that the modern therapeutic approach often conflicts with some aspects of Christian belief. However, that doesn’t mean you have to avoid therapy altogether. Instead, find a therapist or counselor that aligns with your beliefs and goals.

No matter your background, you need to make sure your therapist is a good fit for you. Consider demeanor, specialties, and experience. A therapist might not be a good fit, just like an interior decorator might not have your same style or a business consultant might not have experience in your industry.

Therapy also shouldn’t replace your other support systems. At Infinite Healing, we generally encourage continued participation in Bible studies and church mentoring. The church can be a great source of purpose and belonging. While we encourage Christians to see therapists, we are here to complement your spiritual journey and provide you with more avenues for stepping into your full potential, not replace church involvement.
